Feeding cats and healthy skin and coat
Why is food so important for healthy skin and coat?
Nutrients such as protein, fat, vitamins and minerals play an important role in the health of the skin and fur of cats. To understand their role is important to understand the role of the skin and coat. Skin and hair are designed to protect against the loss of heat or water, or from viruses and bacteria in the organism.
The main constituent of wool is a protein. If the quantity and quality of protein in your cat’s diet inappropriate, your pet’s coat can fall out or become dry, weak and brittle.
The skin is exfoliated and of flat cells that are closely related to each other. These cells have a dense membranes composed of protein and fat. Without sufficient amounts of these nutrients weaken the cell membranes, and preventing the loss of water passing viruses and bacteria.
Essential amino acids and fatty acids
Proteins found in vegetable and animal ingredients. Animal proteins contain all the essential amino acids necessary for a cat, while plant proteins may include only some of the essential amino acids. For optimal health of cats need animal protein.
Fats are also found in plant and animal ingredients. They are included in skin cells as fatty acids. There are two types of essential fatty acids for healthy skin and coat. Linoleic acid maintains good skin and coat condition in cats. With a lack of linoleic acid in cats fur becomes dull and dry, it begins to fall out, and the skin becomes greasy. For normal skin and coat healthy cats also need arachidonic acid.
Both ingredients are omega-6 fatty acids and found in animal tissues such as chicken fat, and vegetable oil (corn and soybean). However, most commercial diets for cats contains an excessive amount of omega-6 fatty acids in the diet so important balance of omega-6 fatty acid, omega-3 fatty acids.
Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish meal and some plants such as flaxseed.
Research company Eukanuba nutritionists have shown that the combination of dietary fat sources in a ratio of 5-10 omega-6 fatty acids to 1 omega-3 fatty acid contributes to the excellent condition of the skin and coat health.

However, the most frequent causes of such changes are the seasonal changes and the transition to another stage of life.
